As the process is slow, it is not necessary to burn all the carbon away as in Bessemer process, but the process can be terminated at given point when desired carbon contents has been achieved.

It is also the newest method in a long series of developments tracing back several thousand years to the origin of the cementation and crucible processes, both of which are now obsolete.
